Gravity and Grace: What Flying a Paramotor Taught Me About True Freedom

There is a specific moment in paramotoring that never gets old. It’s that exact second when the running stops, the wing catches the air, and your feet leave the ground. Suddenly, the heavy gravity that was just holding you down gives way to lift. You are flying.

Whether I am skimming in low or climbing high up into the clouds, the excitement of that freedom is hard to put into words. But lately, my time in the air has become more than just a thrilling hobby. It has become a physical metaphor for my spiritual life. The perspective I gain strapped into a paramotor has profoundly deepened my appreciation for God, His creation, and the relationship He invites us into.

Here is what the sky has taught me about the Creator.

Leaving the Weight Behind Before you can fly, you have to strap on the gear. On the ground, the motor and the harness carry a physical weight. But the moment you take off, the wing takes the load. You are suddenly weightless.

For a long time, I carried a different kind of weight on the ground: the heavy baggage of sin, past mistakes, and shame. We try so hard to run through life carrying things we were never meant to shoulder. But experiencing God's grace is exactly like that moment of liftoff. When we trust Him, He takes the weight. The freedom of flying perfectly mirrors the spiritual freedom of knowing that your sins are forgiven and your shame is left on the ground. You are free to live the life He designed for you.

A Shift in Perspective When you fly a paramotor, the world changes. You see the landscape from a vantage point most people never get to experience. From a few thousand feet up, the things on the ground that seem huge and intimidating suddenly look incredibly small.

Walking with God does the exact same thing to our earthly problems. When we spend time with Him and view our lives through the lens of His sovereignty and love, our perspective shifts. The anxieties, conflicts, and obstacles that feel massive on the ground shrink when compared to the grand, sweeping design of a God who holds it all together. Flying reminds me to look at my life from His perspective.

The Boundaries of True Freedom One of the greatest paradoxes of aviation is that true freedom in the air requires strict obedience to the rules of flight. You can’t just do whatever you want. You have to safely operate the aircraft. You have to respect the weather, understand aerodynamics, and trust your equipment. If you ignore the safety parameters, you don't get more freedom—you get danger.

Our relationship with God works the same way. Sometimes people view God’s commands as restrictive rules designed to keep us tied down. But the reality is the exact opposite. God’s guidelines are the operational safety limits for the human soul. When we live within the boundaries of His wisdom, we don't lose our freedom; we actually experience it at its highest and safest level.

Sharing the Sky One of my absolute favorite parts of being a pilot is sharing this unique perspective with new people. Watching someone experience the joy of flight for the very first time is a thrill of its own.

Faith is meant to be shared the exact same way. The freedom I’ve found in Christ isn't a secret meant to be hoarded. It is an invitation meant to be extended. Just as I want others to experience the physical rush of breaking free from gravity, my greatest hope is that those around me can experience the spiritual rush of breaking free from their past through Jesus.

Every time I start my motor and run into the air, I am reminded of how deeply I am loved, how completely I am forgiven, and what an incredible world God has given us to explore.

"Faith is the compass that guides us through the turbulence of life."
